I had to move somewhere cheap, which meant rural and White, and we had TONS of organizers and door knockers and materials and a clean storefront to hold meetings in. I couldn’t afford to take my kids back to Philly (and I didn’t want to be too close to the people I need to stay away from). I’m not sure though who was “DNC,” who was “the Harris campaign,” and who was “privately funded get-out-the vote” companies. The Democrats lost Florida in elections past bc they hadn’t reached out to the Spanish-speaking community. They hadn’t translated anything, and Republicans had—painting Democrats as “socialist like Chavez.” In 2024, we had a state-wide Zoom call for each county party where we were told to each come up with our own DEI statements and Spanish materials. We were volunteers being asked to reinvent the wheel, like a bunch of online-class students asking each other “wanna work together? You available Saturday?” If you’ve read Tina Nguyen’s Memoir, The MAGA Diaries, or George Lakoff’s Don’t Think of an Elephant, you would know that the other side has professional marketing and messaging disseminated to operatives so everyone can stay on message. 🤦♀️ I moved out of state, so I don’t know what happened since. I think that SURELY someone professional could have shared some talking points!
What you’re describing is something many staffers have quietly pointed to — silencing inside campaigns that should have been listening.
When leadership suppresses voices instead of hearing them, the damage doesn’t stay internal; it spills into the public outcomes everyone sees. Speaking openly about it takes real courage.
