I spent too long in academia in programs that turned out to not have opportunities to gain actual skills. (I blamed myself for being neurodivergent and not having the correct social skills until I listened to Sarah Kendzior’s condemnation of academia in her book View from Flyover Country.)
I am not good at “messaging”—at breaking complex ideas down into visual small bites. After having to learn about education accommodations and different learning styles, I wish I did have these skills, but it’s too late to learn bc my neck has deteriorated.
I feel that a lot of podcasters may have “reach” but no knowledge—they are still reacting with opinions, when we need Americans to have facts. The African-American community in particular has done such impressive, labor-intensive, intellectual work that remains ignored. I dream of the day when this is our school curriculum.
But when I talk to people I am using terms like “structural violence” and people just look at me blankly. My son is an auditory learner, and I’m looking for videos for him to watch about this this summer, but I wish I had the skills to MAKE them. I can see in my head what I want to do but can’t translate that—I wish humans had telepathy or I could take a screenshot of my thoughts.
I am just so sick of opinion-based White male podcasters, including the so-called “progressive” ones my White male son listens to. “That guy does not have the lived experience or skin in the game to give his opinion!” I’ll rant. “He should invite X, Y, Z experts on his show instead.” Counteracting the algorithms is a Sisyphusian task.

I would love to talk with you about these things further… I’m really resonating with much of what you say.
